Ancient Egyptian Dream Interpretation History

Dream interpretation has been practiced throughout several centuries by people from all around the world and nearly all religious cultures. The ancient Egyptian dream history is often referenced in dream guides that have been created throughout the years. Egyptians believed their dreams gave them valuable insight into the future.

In order to understand their dreams, they sought out dream interpreters. They placed dream interpreters in high esteem and nearly every leader had an interpreter on hand. Priests were often used to interpret dreams as they were believed to be closer to the Gods. Interpreters were treated with the same respect as a priest or other Godly person.

Egyptians connected certain symbols that appeared in their dreams with things that happened in their waking life. The Egyptians were sure that dreams that seemed strange and had no obvious meaning held a much deeper meaning that needed deciphering from a professional. Objects that appeared in a person’s dreams were referred to as a dream symbol. Dream symbols were translated into prophecies or warnings by dream interpreters. These dream symbols are often seen in ancient Egyptian dream history books.

The Egyptians believed that their Gods spoke to them through their dreams. The dreams were divided into three separate categories. A relevatory dream was believed to foretell the future or reveal secrets in the waking world, from the spiritual world. In a pious dream, the God would actually appear to the dreamer and ask for some kind of act to prove their devotion. The informational dream delivered messages about various things happening in the dreamer’s life that could benefit from a God’s insight.

Ancient dream prophecy has been recorded in the bible in over 700 instances. One of the most famous ancient Egyptian dreams ever translated was by a young man named Joseph. It is written in the bible that he accurately translated a pharaoh’s strange dream. The translated dream contained symbols that predicted a long famine throughout the country. Joseph’s translation saved the country from certain ruin by providing the foresight to plan ahead and store as much food as possible.

Ancient leaders relied on dream interpretation to help guide their decisions concerning wars, illnesses and even where to build ancient temples and secret hide-away's. Dream temples were constructed to help people successfully reach their Gods. The temples were open to anybody who believed themselves to be pure and believed in the God the temple was built to honor. Many dream interpretation seekers would fast for several days before entering a dream temple. They would burn a cloth with their God’s name written on it and pray to their God before attempting to make contact through their dream.

Ancient Egyptian dream history indicates the people believed these temples could also help provide sick people with the cure for their illness. An ill person would go through the same rituals, calling on the God of their choice in the hope of being cured by the called upon God or given the secret to a cure through the Ancient Egyptian dream interpretation process. Isis was often the God of choice for those that were ill.

If the dream did not leave the person with a clear message, they could seek out a dream interpreter for help in deciphering a potential message. The upper class Egyptians were granted access to a dream book to try and figure out the hidden messages in their dreams. The original Dream Book is believed to be originated around 1275 BC. 108 ancient dreams are recorded in the book along with their meanings. Each dream interpretation contains a number of symbols that define the meaning. Some dream symbols are very strange and would be almost impossible for an average person to guess their meaning. For example, a dreamer that has visions of themselves lying dead is considered to be a good sign, indicating a long life.

Ancient Egyptian dream history has evolved throughout the centuries but the basics remain the same. Although not all cultures believe it is a God speaking to them through dreams, the belief that dreams tell the future and holds the secrets to the inner mind is still widely embraced. The dream symbols created by the ancient Egyptian interpreters have carried on through the years with little deviation.
